One of the most important qualities I value in people, whether they are friends or acquaintances, is their ability to keep their word. Adherence to agreements and promises is fundamental to trust and integrity in any relationship.
Friends, after all, are simply a closer circle of individuals we communicate with. Interestingly, frequency of interaction isn’t necessarily what defines these relationships. It’s the quality and reliability of the interactions that matter most.
Perhaps it sounds a bit idealistic, but I believe that if everyone upheld their commitments and took responsibility for their words, life would be simpler and more comprehensible for all of us. The fabric of society would be stronger, and trust would be a given rather than a rare commodity.
Unfortunately, I often observe that we tend to deceive ourselves before we deceive others. This self-deception doesn’t always stem from a desire to lie, but rather from a desire to appear better than we are. This yearning to be seen in a favorable light creates imbalances in our relationships. As a result, we eventually suffer, as the truth inevitably comes to light and the world corrects these imbalances.
This tendency to stretch the truth or over-promise is a significant barrier to forming meaningful and lasting relationships. Authenticity and honesty are crucial, not just in friendships but in all human interactions.
What are your thoughts on this? How important is it for you that people keep their word?
